Lincoln, the Civil War, and Native Americans

The Civil War era pit North against South, pro-slavery and anti-slavery, and ultimately revolutionized relations between Black people and White people—but Native Americans were swept up in the war, too. They chose sides, expressed their own views on the slavery question, and served in the armed forces. On one occasion, a delegation of tribal chiefs made history by meeting in the White House with Abraham Lincoln.

This conference will feature renowned panelists and is moderated by author, Abraham Lincoln scholar, and Civil War era political expert, Howard Holzer. The panelists will explore the neglected history of Native Americans in the Civil War era.
