SANCTUARY Public Program: Sacred Sounds

Saturday September 21

Other dates...

2:00 PM  –  3:30 PM

In the spiritual or religious context, sound and music are used to move communities in tandem. As hearts sing in unison, and souls sway in cadence, bodies transcend to form one with one another and the divine.

Sacred Music explores the use of sound, voice, and instruments in temples and sanctuaries. Join us for live music and conversation with Ethnomusicologist and Professor Emeritus of Music, Dr. Gerdès Fleurant who specialized in folk and indigenous music forms.

SANCTUARY: Our Sacred Place explores the spiritual roots of Miami by documenting moments of communion with the divine in temples, churches and mosques. This arresting photo series from Little Haiti artist WOOSLER DELISFORT highlights the experiences of Indigenous, African and Caribbean peoples and how they have maximized sacred spaces to serve as life sources for their communities – politically, psychologically, physically and spiritually.

Support for this program has been provided by “The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation at The Miami Foundation.”
